May 22, 2008, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Fau's Holocaust center gets a reprieve, by Editorial Board.
Private donors saving Holocaust center
At a time when the headlines are full of university budget cuts in Florida and programs being slashed, private donors have thankfully come to the rescue of the Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at Florida Atlantic University.
Facing a loss of state money, the Holocaust center was in need of donations of $100,000, an expense FAU couldn't afford this year. Word got out, and the response from private donors has raised confidence the center will continue operating.
That is good news for all of South Florida. The center — which has half of its annual budget paid by the Boca Raton-based League for the Educational Awareness of the Holocaust — provides the Holocaust studies curriculum for seven school districts, including Broward and Palm Beach. It also offers a lending library and professional development.
The state budget hopefully will allow for fuller funding in years to come. For now, private donors have done a mitzvah.
