In the 1750's Haiti was the richest colony in the entire world; it provided 50% of the gross national product of France.
Today it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The causes of Haiti's misery are human, rooted in greed and power.
It's rulers, it's elite people, and the international community have continously assured the destruction of Haiti's
colonial wealth and the creation of her misery. (paraphrased from Why is Haiti so Poor ? by Bob Corbett)
Today we are called to rescue Haiti from Earthquake devestation (Dr. Paul Farmer's testimony at Senate Foreign Relations Committee on January 27, 2010), and we should do so in all the ways we can. We believe that in our rescue we should be keenly aware of why Haiti was so vulnerable and our rescue should address systematic failures at the same time that it provides relief. So, we contemplate tasks for building a model village in Bondeau, Haiti that will have "normal" protection against similar catastrophe in the future and that will be an example of a better course towards Haiti's future. |
