The actual count of homeless persons in the 2005 "Point in Time Survey" was 3314 in December, 2005 (page 5 of 84). 84% (2784) were individuals. 3% (100) of were children; 13% (431) were in families with children. (Based on other information, this means the point in time survey greatly undercounted homeless families.) Of those reporting "prior episodes of homelessness", 31% reported they had been without a regular place to stay 4 or more times and 39% reported that this was the first time they had been without a regular place to stay.
The Broward 10 Year Plan estimates the number of homeless people on any given day as 10,000 (page 3 of 84). This estimate assumes a multiplier of slightly over 3.
Over the past 14 years Broward County has awakened to their problem of homelessness, rallied effective leadership in the business, civic and political community, and has developed an effective network of facilities and comprehensive programs.
The number of beds available for homeless persons in Broward County was 4794 in 2006 (page 21 of 84).
