Teen-run Darfur group hosts concert to raise money

May 05, 2008, Palm Beach Post, Teen-run Darfur group hosts concert to raise money, by Gretel Sarmiento.

BOCA RATON — Size matters, when it comes to raising awareness. The bigger the event the better.

That's why Tuesday's concert at the American Airlines Arena means so much to a group of teens from Saint Andrew's High School in Boca Raton.

"We had a goal in mind and it wasn't where we are now," said Gabriel Schillinger.

Schillinger is the executive director of For Darfur Inc., a non-profit organization formed by five Saint Andrew students last year to draw more attention to the atrocities taking place in Darfur. The group started out slowly, with small concerts and events when, "This concert just fell into our laps," said Schillinger. "It was a deal that we couldn't refuse."

For Darfur partnered with Live Nation to promote the upcoming Kanye West Glow in the Dark Tour in Miami. The concert will feature artists N.E.R.D., Rihanna and Lupe Fiasco. Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization that gives emergency aid to people affected by armed conflicts, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters will get $1 from every ticket sale. For Darfur was Doctors Without Borders' largest contributor last year.

"I didn't expect it to get this big," said Junior James Sunshine.

Currently the organization has over 150 members and has established seven local chapters in Florida, as well as across the country including the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University.

With most of its high school members now heading to college For Darfur is focusing on reaching as many teenagers as possible. In a six-minute Youtube video for instance the founders are seen introducing the organization and the conflict at hand. It's estimated that over 400,000 people have died and over 2 million have been displaced since the conflict began in 2003. As opposed to other organizations addressing the crisis, For Darfur hasn't visited the region yet. For one, its members are teens. The second reason,

"We are more effective here," Schillinger said.

Last year, the group raised over $100,000 in conjunction with fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer. To date, the organization has raised over $300,000. The group is currently in talks with the city of Delray Beach for a bike race.
