holdinghands This website is meant to contribute to the landscape by which Palm Beach County can move towards having the qualities of a "Culture of Peace" or the "Beloved Community" . We don't intend to invent anything, but simply to nourish human instincts already at work. Many people and organizations are wellsprings in our landscape; this is a way to learn about them and to find them.

There is a clear point of view in these pages. Our worldview is to take seriously the world's problems and to be guided by our best experts. We note that politicians and our electorate are slow to be distracted from their preoccupations despite fair warning. And we note that experts tend to be pessimistic. We take encouragement from the ingenuity and adaptability that have been shown when we do awaken.

We put great importance on our personal work, both our internal work and our need to make a difference. We are not political. We hold dear the values of responsibility, hard work and discipline that are sometimes said to be conservative values. We hold equally dear the values of compassion and empowerment that are sometimes said to be liberal values. Faith and faith communities are important in our social action strategies. We are compelled by the foundation in peace, justice and brotherhood of all our major faiths: Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Unitarian Universalist and Hindu

Martin Luther King popularized the idea of the Beloved Community and many organizations in Palm Beach County are helping us move towards it. This web portal is devoted to encouraging this spirit as it shows up in many ways. At present we see that we have these specific jobs.

  1. We provide an internet based communications tool comprised of these web pages and a facility for promoting "progressive" community activities through tasteful use of e-mail as well as postal mail and telephone. That effort has started in the Boca Raton area with outward ripples of influence. Our List of Faith Communities lists 1021 congregations. The list can be viewed by municipality and by denomination .
  2. Our Community Calendar will be important if it has clear focus and if all events related to that focus appear in it.
  3. We will give special importance to bringing constructive attention and social action on behalf of homeless persons and families. Family Promise, Boca Helping Hands, Church of the Holy Redeemer (Lake Worth) Westgate Tabernacle Church, and The Lord's Place and St. Laurence Chapel are some of the organizations through which we can work.
  4. Our Database of Helping Agencies may become important. Also click on "Web Links" to see how we might create a Database of Elected Public Officials
These thoughts will evolve as we move forward. Meanwhile, take a look at the Peace Mural exhibit openning in Washington, DC at Thanksgiving.
